Proper skin care results in healthy skin. Summer is almost here and the sun is the skin’s number one enemy. Daily skin care twice a day is recommended for everyone. Facial care involves cleansing, toning, moisturizing and sun protection.

Cleansing removes environmental impurities, makeup, dirt and oil from the surface of the skin. The cleanser should be appropriate for your skin type. If you have normal, oily, dry or combination skin, select a product that is designed for those types of problems. Ordinary bar soap is not recommended for cleansing the face. They can be harsh and may strip the moisture from the face.

The next step in facial care is toning with an astringent or toner. Depending on your skin type pick the appropriate toner. Astringents may be used for oily skin. Toners are used for all other skin types. Toning restores the natural pH of the skin; 4.5 – 5.5.

Moisturizing replenish moisture, oil and protects the skin. It is best to select moisturizers that contain humectants. Humectants are ingredients that provide a barrier that helps seal in moisture.

The final and I think the most important step is protection from the sun. Sunscreen protects the skin from harmful UVA and UVB rays. Studies have shown that 90% of wrinkles are caused by excessive sun exposure. Only 10% of wrinkles are caused by the natural aging process. Sun bathing, gardening, working outside or taking a walk can be harmful to the skin if you do not apply a sunscreen. Choose a sunscreen with an SPF of 30. The SPF means the length of time you can stay in the sun until reapplying the sunscreen. SPF30 means after thirty minutes of the first application, apply another application. Your sunscreen should absorb and block the sun burning rays. Daily use of sunscreen is an important step in preventing premature aging of the skin.

Before running out to the beach or that cookout this summer, make your skin your top priority. Take the time to get a Professional facial done at the Salon or Spa by a Licensed Cosmetologist or Licensed Esthetician.
